What UL 9540 covers
The entire ESS as an integrated product — not just the cells, but the power electronics and the control software, tested as one system. This is the system-level counterpart to UL 1973's pack-level scope.
Why it matters for balcony solar
If you add a system-level battery to a balcony setup, UL 9540 is the certification that covers the whole thing working together.
The common mix-up
This is a real gap in UL 3700 coverage: UL 3700's 32-reference chain includes UL 1973 (the pack) but NOT UL 9540 (the complete ESS) — verified against docs/UL3700-SPEC.md, 2026-07-16. So a UL 3700 kit's storage coverage stops at the pack. Look for UL 9540 separately on any system-level battery.
